Romney Assists in Securing Grant to Provide Broadband for Uinta Basin

WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) today applauded a recent decision by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) ReConnect program to award STRATA Networks a loan-grant combination in the amount $23.6 million, which will be used to provide new and improved broadband infrastructure to more than 3,000 locations in the Uinta Basin.

“I’m pleased that my office was able to assist STRATA Networks in navigating the administrative processes required to receive this grant, which will greatly enhance access to broadband in more communities in the Uinta Basin,” Senator Romney said. “I will continue to make access to rural broadband a priority in the parts of our state that are currently underserved.”

“Senator Romney’s office was very helpful in our efforts to secure USDA grant-loan funding through the ReConnect program,”
said Bruce H. Todd, CEO of STRATA Networks. “Romney’s staff was attentive and responsive as we worked through the application process and assisted with coordinating with state and federal entities.”

Background:

  • In January, Romney and colleagues introduced the Connected Rural Schools Act, legislation to improve broadband access for Utah’s rural schools.
  • Last fall, Romney urged the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in Utah to expedite its permitting process for fiber deployment projects, which will enhance access to broadband, Internet, and cellular communications in rural Utah.
